5 Job Interview Tips
Job interviews or other one-to-one situations are famous for bringing out people’s nervous traits. In this article we look at a few job interview tips for when that dreaded day comes.
1: Know who you’re dealing with
Do a bit of research on the company or organisation so that you have a good feeling for the kind of environment you’d be working in. Ask anyone in HR and they’ll give you stories of candidates who didn’t even take the time to look on the company’s website to see what industry they’re in. Would you employ someone who couldn’t remember the name of your company?
2: Be comfortable with the role
When you’ve applied for several positions it’s easy to forget the ins and outs of the particular job in question. You might be as happy with a project planning role as you are as a communications coordinator, but make sure you have the right position in mind. Print out the job description and make notes the evening before the interview.
3: Are you qualified?
Normally you wouldn’t be looking at job interview tips without already having good credentials, but you’ll probably be asked about your experience and qualifications. Make sure you can demonstrate a link between your professional/academic profile and the particular role you’re applying for.
4: Expect the unexpected
Some interviewees throw in strange questions, designed to take you away from the formal context and show your personality. What would you say if you were asked to tell a joke in an interview situation? Another difficult question relates to pointing out weaknesses or times when you have encountered conflict in the workplace.
5: Look the part
There are also a few simple things you can do to make sure your first impression is a good one. It may seem obvious to most of us, but you must dress smartly for every interview. Even if the job does not involve being in a formal environment, an interview is a formal occasion! If you arrive dressed in a hoody and jeans you are conveying the message that you do not respect the interview scenario.
Having said that, the interviewer is looking for you to demonstrate that you are likeable. Your application shows your skillset, but the purpose of the interview is largely to put a face to the name. So a good set of job interview tips isn’t complete without the following: Smile, make eye contact and try to make it look like you want to be there. After all, you are asking to be paid to work in the same room as these people. Employers are human beings and they will always gravitate towards likeable candidates.
