Top Tips for driving in darker conditions
As the clocks go back this weekend (30th October) we will start to see the darker night’s drawing in and the weather changing to give a more autumnal and wintery feel.
A report from the RAC has shown that there are 20 more road accidents per day in the two weeks following the autumn clock change, so now more than ever it is important to ensure that we are taking extra care on the roads.
We have compiled a list of expert tips for drivers, professional and otherwise, for staying safe during the changing weather conditions…
Driving at Dusk
In the late afternoon as the sun begins to set you might experience weak light and glare from the sun. This can make neutral colours more difficult to see, so put your lights on a little earlier and remember to keep your distance from other vehicles.
Stay Alert
As more of the day becomes darker (mornings and late afternoon) it’s more important than ever to be aware of your surroundings and watch out for hazards on the road, from pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles.
Washer Fluid
Autumnal weather conditions can often mean more wet and muddy spray hitting your windscreen so ensure your vehicle’s water bottle is topped up and your wipers are working.
Lights On
Make sure all the lights on your vehicles are working and remember to switch them on as soon as the light begins fade in the afternoons/evenings. Drivers without their lights on in the dark could face a fine and points on their licence for not driving with due care and attention.
Take your Time
Time pressure can have a negative effect on your driving because the more you rush, the more you are concentrating on getting to your destination quickly rather than safely. Take extra care whilst driving, particularly if weather conditions are poor, and give yourself a little bit of additional time to get to your destination.
Simon Hunter, senior driver at NX, advises: “As professional drivers, we’re all too aware of the dangers posed by bad weather. For those who work in distribution, the risk could be increased by rushing to make it to a delivery point within a certain time. For others, hurrying home from work before it gets dark to meet family commitments can easily lead to accidents.
“Take your time and take care – reckless driving in is just not worth the risk.”
